Urgent Cybertruck Recall: Physical Repair Required for Cantrail

Your Cybertruck might need a trip to the service center. Here’s the truth about the Cantrail recall and how it affects wrapped trucks.

Today we’re recording in the Cybertruck with an important hardware update. We’ve been through a lot with our EVs—including two Model X buybacks—so I’m always honest with you about technical issues.

There is a new official recall for the Tesla Cybertruck, and this is a big one because it cannot be fixed with an Over-the-Air (OTA) update. This requires a physical visit to a Tesla Service Center to ensure your truck remains safe on the road.

The Technical Breakdown: What is the Cantrail Issue?

The recall was submitted to the NHTSA on March 18th, affecting virtually every Cybertruck produced between November 2023 and February 2025.

The issue involves the Cantrail panel—specifically, the structural adhesive used to keep this exterior trim piece attached to the vehicle. If that adhesive fails or becomes detached, the panel can become loose. At highway speeds, this isn’t just a cosmetic annoyance; a loose panel can fly off the truck and become a dangerous projectile for other drivers.

How do I know if I’m affected?

  • Check your VIN: Head over to the NHTSA website or the Tesla app to see if your vehicle is listed.
  • Delivery Status: Many new owners are reporting that their deliveries have been halted. If you were expecting your truck this week, this recall is likely the reason for the delay.

The “Wrapped” Cybertruck Dilemma

One of my biggest concerns with this physical repair is for those of you who have already customized your rigs.

  • Wrap Replacement: If Tesla decides the panel needs to be completely replaced, they aren’t going to pay to re-wrap that new piece. You’ll be coming out of pocket for the vinyl or PPF.
  • Matching Colors: Finding a perfect match for a wrap that has been exposed to the sun for a few months can be tough.
  • My Strategy: I haven’t wrapped my Cybertruck yet (though I plan to soon!), so I’m going to wait and see how Tesla handles the first wave of repairs. I want to know if they are just reapplying a stronger adhesive or if they’re swapping hardware entirely.

Recalls: Part of the EV Journey

Look, as a tech guy, I’m not going to blow this out of proportion. Recalls are part of the automotive industry, especially with brand-new hardware platforms like the Cybertruck.

  • Comparison: Ford recently had a recall for over a million Explorers for a similar trim-detachment issue. It happens.
  • The Process: Schedule your appointment through the Tesla app. It costs you $0 in parts or labor—just a bit of your time.

Don’t panic, but don’t ignore it. The Cantrail is an important piece of the truck’s aerodynamics and safety. Let Tesla do their job, get the structural adhesive checked, and keep on trucking.
